Welcome to the home of NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet in Shipshewana: Blue Gate Theatre!

Riegsecker Marketplace in Shipshewana began with Mel Riegsecker, a craftsman raised in Northern Indiana Amish Country. He learned harness making from his father and, in 1970, began building detailed miniature wagons and six-horse hitches. The first pieces sold quickly, and demand continued to grow.

As interest in his work increased, visitors came to watch the craftsmen at work. To accommodate this, Mel and his wife June purchased and renovated a factory building in 1984, creating the Shipshewana Craft Barn. This became the start of Riegsecker Marketplace.

The business expanded over time to include retail shops, furniture stores, a restaurant, hotel, event spaces, and the Blue Gate Theatre. Today, the company operates multiple stores, dining, lodging, and entertainment offerings.

Most of the furniture sold is made within 30 miles of Shipshewana. The restaurant, which began in the 1980s with a single dining room and 50 seats, was later rebuilt and expanded into a larger facility with 750 seats, multiple dining rooms, a bakery, and a theatre.
